NICARAGUA, THE BEAUTIFUL

Recently, I returned from a trip to the beautiful country of Nicaragua. I mean, some may already know that becaue I bombarded everyone with countless Instagram posts and the obligatory airport check-in the day I peaced outta the freezing-ass cold. Before I left, I had a number of people ask, “Why Nicaragua?” as the new destination I was about to conquer. In their opinion, it seemed an unconventional choice, especially for a delicate black women like myself, and even more so because I planned on traveling solo. While Nicaragua is not yet (mark my words) the #1 go-to Central American destination for most people, simply because it’s not as known as say, Costa Rica and Panama are, the underrated once-in-a-blue-moon hidden-gem appeal was exactly what attracted me there. A good friend of m...

7 REASONS YOU SHOULD TRAVEL ABROAD BEFORE YOU’RE 25

I consider myself lucky that my wanderlust has been given opportunities to thrive at such a young age. My first trip abroad took place when I was just 14, and it opened up a desire for travel that I had only experienced in my daydreams. I had always known that travelling and exploring the world would be an important part of my life, but I never really imagined the lessons travelling abroad would teach me. I understand that for most young people travelling abroad seems impossible, or at least improbable. However, I believe the experience of travelling to a different country is worth saving up the money and finding the time. Below are some of the things I have learned from travelling abroad, and hopefully in the process of sharing I can illustrate why everyone should travel abroad before the...

EAT. PRAY. LOVE. AND OTHER MOVIE CLICHES TRAVELING TAUGHT ME

In this day in age ask anyone if they like to travel and 99% percent of the time the answer will be yes. I have only met one person in my life that doesn’t like it. I think we like it because we romanticize the idea of leaving for a couple of weeks and just experiencing the culture and beauty of another place without the hassle of answering emails or dealing with issues back home. But movies, tv, and books take that to a whole new level. We want to fall madly in love for a week in Paris and have that guy follow us home to reveal he is a prince and he’s ready to make us their princess. We want our Italian adventure to turn into us having a pop star doppelgänger and a mysterious Italian heartthrob who would drive us around in a Vespa and promise to make us the biggest star in the world, only...

I’M A PART-TIME TRAVELER

I’m a part time traveler. And no, I’m not the “quit my job, sold my car, and bought a one way ticket” type of travel blogger. Truth be told, throughout high school and college I always dreamed that I would one day become that type of travel blogger. I fantasized about the day I would jet off into a new life, mused over the exotic cities I would call home, and envisioned a life without ties on the open road. But in the middle of all of my fanciful daydreaming, the most unexpected series of events occurred: I fell in love, graduated from college, accepted a corporate position in an amazing city, and moved into a cute condo with my husband. Before I realized it, my dreams changed. I was excited for the future of my career, and I enjoyed the stability (and okay, the paycheck) that my  job offe...

WHY POSITIVE SELF TALK IS THE BEST TRAVEL COMPANION

Sometimes you find yourself standing in a train station in a foreign country, looking up at all the signs, unable to read any of them. You have less than ten minutes to figure out which platform your train is leaving from and how to get there. Safe to say, the stress is real. I recently found myself in this position while on a trip to Italy. I was travelling from Copenhagen, where I was studying abroad, to Florence, Italy to visit friends from my home university. I had flown in to Bologna, a small town a half hour away, to save money and had meticulously planned how to take the shuttle to the train station and then the train to Florence. Upon arrival, the anxiety and stress of travel hit. What if I missed the train? What if I lost my phone, or ticket, or passport? What if I got off at the ...

HOMESICK

HOMESICK I’m homesick for a home I don’t even have. I yearn for familiarity. I want a place to set my feet that is comfortable and warm. I have lived in 4 states and 3 time zones in 2 years. I have put in 7 change of address forms in 11 months. When trips end and everyone says “I can’t wait to go home and sleep in my own bed” I am reminded that I haven’t slept in my own bed in over a year. I am transient. I am nomadic. I am a wanderer. I have another rented room. Granted it’s bigger and there are more windows. The ocean has been replaced with trees and mountains. The cold sea air replaced by the warm sunlight. I’m finally getting to wear all those summer clothes the San Francisco climate didn’t allow. With all of my moving one would thi...

TO “SEA” IT IS TO BELIEVE IT

TO “SEA” IT IS TO BELIEVE IT Living on the island of Cyprus and more specifically Limassol, which is along the coast, I have never appreciated its natural beauties. I am known as a winter person who enjoys her coats, knits and boots, cold winter nights, herbal teas, attention-grabbing TV series and page- turning books. Having in mind that our winters in Cyprus are mild, with our sun barely going into hiding, I have learnt to withstand the sunshine and just look forward to my few months of winter, because that’s all we get here. Endless summers have gone by, finding me do nothing at all to make the most of them. Going to the beach with the family at weekends and not swimming was pretty much it. This year however was different. This year saw me embrace the real summer, the Cyprio...

WHAT PLANET DID I VISIT? OR, MY ADVENTURE IN ICELAND

WHAT PLANET DID I VISIT? OR, MY ADVENTURE IN ICELAND In June 2015, I traveled to another planet. Not really. I went to Iceland. But the experience, in all honesty, was completely out of this world. I had been reading about Iceland, and got it in my head that I wanted to go. I had previously traveled throughout Europe and went to China for a program in college, but I had a yearning to go someplace new and out of my element, totally on my own. As I planned a way to get myself there, constantly talking about it with family and friends, I mentioned it to my sister, Ellen, and we decided that this was going to be a trip better experienced together. And so we set off, booking our airfare via Wow Air, and driving to Baltimore for our take off. Our parents, who have always encouraged both of us to...
