SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT

Please, just wrap me in your arms And sleep, sleep through the night.   You can count stars while I count your lashes. You can believe while my wall crashes. You can dream while I swim in your scent. You can lay down while I catch my breath. You can smile while I love you again. You can forget while I seize the pain.   But please, just wrap me in your arms And sleep, sleep through the night.   You can count drops as the rain falls down. You can believe as I give up my crown. You can dream as the music sounds. You can lay down as my heart beat pounds. You can smile as the skies turn grey. You can forget as time fades away.   But remember to wrap me in your arms And sleep, sleep through the night.   Author: Angélica Pérez Email: acperez0...

TINY HOLES AND BEAMING LIGHT

It all started when they realized something was missing. A tiny hole of light beaming through their chest that refused to be covered. They acknowledged that the hole was there – but refused to do anything about it. And others, well, others noticed it too – the gap – the light pouring out of it, but never said anything. Because they too had a secret. They had the same hole, same light. Over time more holes started to appear – and it was getting harder to ignore what was so very obvious in plain sight. Till one person pointed it out, “Hey, your hole – that beaming light – it’s exactly like mine.” And the acknowledgment was all the other person needed to realize they were not alone. It caught on like wild fire. The holes – the light – the acknowledgment. People started peeling off...

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

This phrase was coined by the writer, Marie Shear, in a column from the newsletter, “New Directions of Women”, in 1986. Feminism, at its core, is committed to fighting for the equal treatment of all oppressed and marginalized people- not just women. Women, as a whole, are continually fighting for equal treatment in numerous areas throughout society. Specifically, our society sees great disparities in the representation of women in the STEM workforce- especially in the areas of engineering, computer science, and the physical sciences. According to the National Girls Collaborative Project, “Women earned 57.3% of bachelor’s degrees in all fields in 2013 and 50.3% of science and engineering bachelor’s degrees. However, while women receive over half of bachelor’s degrees awarded in the bi...

THE ROLE OF A VISUAL ARTIST IN OUR POLITICIZED TIMES

I’ve always been apolitical. A Russian-Jewish refugee of the 1990’s and a long time citizen, I never participated in elections because I thought my voice in Democratic Massachusetts won’t really matter. I didn’t partake in endless social media discussions that drained one’s energy and led nowhere. Unfortunately, I was unable to participate in yesterday’s Women’s March in Boston. However, I answered a public call and submitted a poster for the march, and it stirred something inside me. This something finally wants a voice because it’s had enough. It stayed silent when I was grabbed on subway trains in Paris while studying abroad. I didn’t have enough courage when I was harassed in the workplace. I put up with years of male voices directing my self-image and societal responsibilities. This e...

SOMETIMES

The world is simultaneously a beautiful and horrifying place People live and people die And sometimes people simply exist Sometimes souls are lost while bodies are still being found Sometimes you think about the world And you don’t want to be here Amongst the war and violence Amongst the sea of sadness You feel empty and numb Because of the darkness in the world You want to make it better But it seems impossible Sometimes there is pain And sometimes there is fear Sometimes there is despair and loneliness Or numbness and anxiety Sometimes, there’s a glimmer of hope But it’s always too good to last Soon enough the past comes back to eat us alive Leaving nothing but skin and bones Author: Alex Owens Email: alexowens96@gmail.co&#x...

CAN WE REALLY FIND LITERATURE IN ART?

Literature, as far as we know, contains powerful messages which not everyone has the pleasure to discover. Some do not enjoy reading books, or they delay their reading for another time. This is why I have decided to bring together important ideas in literature and project them onto a canvas. Humans learn in different ways, and have a desire to grasp knowledge as quickly as possible. Therefore, through abstract art, I present these ideas with the intent to stimulate the individual’s mind. In return, I ask the audience to think critically about these art pieces, and immerse themselves in the artwork. My artistic process consists of pairing colors in my mind that reflect the particular time period that a literary work was written in (If I think of a significant work of Ancient Greece, such as...

INVISIBLE MOTHERHOOD

When you are no longer pregnant, the world gets scarier. Grocery stores become your temple to cry in, As strangers walk by with empathy in their eyes unknowingly, why.   Your body will no longer be the center of a miracle, It will become a warzone. A reminder that love was once made here, That society wants to claim it for its own, Adjusting it accordingly. It will never hold this same experience.   When you are no longer pregnant, You will question your God more than you thank Him. You will feel ill prepared for the battle he has just sent you in. Begging for him to take it all back.   When you are no longer pregnant, You change. You will cry for the things that once scared you, Because now this seems scarier.   There will be no more massages, Gentle “we can do this,” ...

MISSED CONNECTIONS

Sometimes I think of all the versions of myself I’ve been, all the places I’ve seen and all the people I’ve met. All the people that have changed my life and all the people that I will never see again. Because you know, some people are just passing by. But all those things — that are never just things — made me who I am right now, writing this, getting farther and farther away from you. And what I was like when you met me, I was someone else, I was me, but at the same time I was all those things you’ll never know about. You, at the same time, were all these things I’ll never know about: all these versions of yourself. And this version of yourself, the one you decided to show me for a while, while it was still right, is the one that I keep. The one that makes sense, because it’s the o...

30 MINS A DAY FOR CREATIVITY

When artist and senior art director, Karen Whitaker, faced another day in the office, toiling away at a ‘creative’ job – to pay the bills – but not really flexing the creative muscles that yearned to be exercised, the 30designs30days project was born. 30designs30days became a challenge to create 30 designs in 30 days in 30 minutes apiece. By flexing the creative muscles, Karen also challenged herself to make the time for creative expression every day and breaking the binds of perfectionism. Discovering that 30 minutes is not that long, the exercise of carving out time for creativity has meant much more than having a flawless design at the end of the half hour. Karen now encourages others to take the challenge, saying “By making the time and letting myself go for 30 minutes, wha...

EPIPHANY

“The light peeks through my cream colored blinds beckoning me to start the day. Let me sleep longer – I toss and turn – using the blanket as my shield. But no, the light – the light keeps getting brighter. And that’s a lot like how an epiphany begins. It twinkles and turns catching your eye.. Before it’s full blown illuminating your life. Try to ignore it you might, but eventually. And I promise eventually, You’ll give into the light.”   I wrote this poem almost two years ago and it still rings true today. Sometimes you get a feeling you just can’t shake. You can hide beneath the covers, but eventually you have to come out and face the light. Whether it’s relationships no longer serving you or an idea that won’t stop tapping you on the shoulder. If ...

RELATIONSHIPS AND CARPET

Relationships are like newly laid carpet. In the beginning you are so very careful, Tread lightly, Don’t dirty what’s new. Then as time passes and the excitement wears off – The newness doesn’t seem so new. You start taking risks. Shoes on, but their clean – I’ll run through just this once. Slowly, but surely, the mistakes start to dirty what was once new. Until you drop a glass of wine, The worst bomb yet. And you’re on your hands and knees.. Trying to soak up all the red, Take away the eye sore, Wondering how it happened.. If you could have only kept it new.
