HOW TO STAY CREATIVE DURING THE BUSIEST MONTH OF THE YEAR

Well, creatives, we’ve just trotted past Thanksgiving and we’re galloping head-on into the holiday season. While December is full of good cheer and clinking glasses, traditionally it can be nearly impossible get into creative flow. There’s a saying that “boredom breeds creativity.” Studies seem to confirm this idea. During one study, Lazar writes, “[Researchers] asked a group of subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinking, such as devising uses for a pair of cups. The results? Bored subjects came up with more ideas than a non-bored control group, and their ideas were often more creative.” (Wired, 2017) But with so many ugly sweater parties and cookie exchanges, it’s difficult to feel anything remotely close to calm, ...

WORKSHOP: NARROWING IN ON YOUR IDEAS

I Don’t Need Help Coming Up With Ideas—I Need To Know Which To Go After Next What you’ll need: Notebook, pen, and Wild Heart flowchart (attached) I recently taught a creativity workshop to a group of writers and artists who were struggling to get started on their “Next Big Thing”. The classes had been broken into three sessions: ideas, structure and work-life balance. Out of all three, the ideas session had the fewest participants, despite the S.O.S. call from creatives for help kick-starting their art. When I brought this up to the group, one woman replied, “It’s not that I don’t have ideas. I just can’t seem to make the leap from lots of ideas to following through on just one.” Enter the creative person’s endless struggle: too many ideas and not enough days in a lifetime to g...

I DON’T NEED HELP COMING UP WITH IDEAS—I NEED TO KNOW WHICH TO GO AFTER NEXT

What you’ll need: notebook, pen and Wild Heart flowchart (below) I recently taught a creativity workshop to a group of writers and artists who were struggling to get started on their Next Big Thing. The classes had been broken into three sessions: ideas, structure and work-life balance. Out of all three, the ideas session had the fewest participants, despite the S.O.S. call from several creatives for help kickstarting their art. When I brought this up to the group, one woman replied, “It’s not that I don’t have ideas. I just can’t seem to make the leap from lots of ideas to following through with just one.” Enter the creative person’s endless struggle: too many ideas and not enough days in a lifetime to get after them all. So, how do you choose? How do we organize our thoughts and dreams s...

MIDWEST CRAFT CONFERENCE 2018: CRAFTERS, MAKERS AND SHAKERS

The Midwest Craft Conference was a three day event filled with knowledge, crafting and fun. Women and men from all over the midwest traveled to learn how to refine their craft. We had the pleasure of sitting in on workshops such as “Work Your Way to a Book Deal” by Lesley Ware from Creative Cookie, and “PR Basics” by Daniella Cortez of Rebel Marie. Both were informative and provided insight into different ways to market your craft. Some of the other workshops included: Expanding Your Product Line, Deductions for Crafters, Alternate Revenue Streams and Self-care for Creatives. We walked right into a crafter’s heaven; Craftaway Camp was decorated in lights, a table full of fabric sat for the taking and con-goers sat happily creating everywhere. Perhaps the most ...

HOME MAKEOVER FROM A NON-DIYER

Searching for a home is an exciting yet tedious process. You scroll through photos, hope that you are one of the first people to walk through the home and you fall in love with it much like how you fall in love with a human. You picture the future, your life there, the possibilities, and it’s heartbreaking when you put in an offer and it doesn’t get accepted. But, that’s not how this story ends. We put a bid in, we wrote a letter and we were chosen! We live in charming Clintonville, Ohio and picked a home on a beautiful tree-lined street. We aren’t DIYers. Not for lack of trying, but for lack of time. We decided with this home we were going to try and fix it up ourselves. I think we did one hell of a job. Special thanks to both of our parents as we couldn’t ha...

A DIY GUIDE TO OPENING AND ACTIVATING THE 7 CHAKRAS

A chakra (pronounced ‘cha-kra’) is an energy centre within the auric and physical body. The term chakra, derived from Sanskrit, means spinning wheel. A wheel spins like a vortex, or a whirl wind, as each chakra is a disc or node that serves as the nonphysical highway through which energy travels. These energy centers, when even, restore harmony, which translate into a sense of well-being, health and oneness. Though we commonly talk about the seven main chakras, there are 114 chakras in the body and many more on the outside of the body. However, let us focus on just the seven to get us started. Chakras restoration is not some hippy dippy trend or movement; its roots lie deep within pre-historic Indian society. Though empirically we cannot prove that chakras reside within us, we certainly ca...

FINDING THE COURAGE TO START MY BUSINESS

Hello, fellow bloggers, entrepreneurs, designers, DIY-ers, and everyone inbetween! My name is Kathryn Wheeler and I’m the owner of The Paper Studio, an online business for all your printable, décor, and design needs. I’m brand-new to blogging and even less experienced in running my own business. That being said, I know I’m not the only one. I hope that sharing my process of opening a business will be beneficial for other burgeoning entrepreneurs. I’ve had this dream for quite some time, so making it this far is a huge step for me. My biggest obstacle (so far) has been finding the courage to start. Learning what you want to do comes from knowing what makes you happy. Figure Out What Makes You Happy I’m sure that everyone says something along the lines of, “if you told me two years ago that ...

7 THINGS TO CONSIDER AS YOU SELF-EXPRESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Make gifts this year! Here’s some ways to stay sane and motivated as you crash through your holiday projects this week: 1- Please don’t say “I’m not creative.” That’s like saying, “I don’t have brainwaves.” If you are awake, you can create. Draw someone’s name on a card and color it. Frame it in one of those $1 clear acrylic frames from Walgreens. They can keep it on their desk (just ideas). 2- Every human is an artist, period. If you attempt a stick figure or doodle, you are making art. Because you are creating lines in a moment in time. And those lines can only come through you and every single life experience of which you are comprised. Therefor those lines are 100% unique. Therefor you are an artist. Therefor everyone is an artist if/when they feel like it. 3- Whether you are making a ...
