Stress is something that’s almost unavoidable in today’s world. People are often overworked and put a hundred and twenty percent of their lives into their professions and studies. This often keeps them on edge and worried about their future, in spite of their best efforts. Stress isn’t exactly good for your body, nor your mind. It’s important to know how to take the edge off and reduce the amount of stress you feel on a day-to-day basis. A stress-free zone might be just what you need in your home to help you handle the pressure. Here’s how you create one with ease:

Stick to soft colours

Colours play an enormous part in room design and décor. They are an integral visual element that affects everything from the mood of the room to how the light will reflect from the walls. But, there’s also the psychological effect of colours to consider.

The mind reacts differently while seeing different colours. It’s something you can pretty much guess right from the start. Blue is a calm and soothing colour. Yellow evokes excitement, and red keeps you ready and alert. However, the sharpness and strength of the colours also affect how you feel.

Softer and less pronounced colours tend to have a calming effect. When you want to relax, you probably wouldn’t prefer bright neon or high-contrast colours surrounding you. Instead, soft and inviting pastel colours would be more preferable. A good choice of colours and patterns will further help calm the room and reduce stress whenever you find yourself inside it.

Introduce a little nature

Plants are great additions to any room in your home. They provide you with some of the most diverse and interesting colours and shapes, while nearly always going well with your chosen room designs. They’re also key aspects of home décor, for reasons other than their contribution to aesthetics.

For one, plants have been proven to be a very soothing presence in any room. Research has shown that people who spend time in rooms and offices that have sufficient plant life present feel less stress and have an easier time focusing on any given task. The reasons for this are unclear, but it might have something to do with people feeling like they’re surrounded by nature. Green and natural elements calm you, so introducing a few plants here and there would do a lot of good for battling stress.

Create a personal cinema in your room

Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to watch a movie in the comfort of your own home. You don’t have to visit a movie theatre to get the full experience of a movie. Watching a movie takes you out of your stressful day and immerses you in a story. HD screens, strong speakers, and a good atmosphere can get you there with ease, especially if you have a solid projector to play your movies for you.

It’s not particularly difficult to create a cinema all to yourself, either. Clear one wall in your room and keep it a uniform light colour. Then, use a projector ceiling mount to place your projector somewhere where it can play a movie unobstructed. Get some popcorn in the microwave, fire up Netflix or Hulu, and you’ll be lost in some amazing story in no time. It’s a great way to get the most immersive experience out of your movie-watching without much effort.

Choose adequate seating

There’s nothing quite like putting down your briefcase and sitting down after a long, hard day of exhausting work. When you’re done with your responsibilities, you want to be able to relax and unwind as much as possible. This gives you some respite and prepares you for the rest of your day, alongside the day after that. However, you probably don’t want to always take a nap when you’re done with work, so resting on your bed isn’t the best option. Having a seat on a comfy chair might just be the ideal choice.

To get the most out of rest and relaxation in your home, you need really comfortable seating. The dining room chairs won’t do. Have a very comfortable chair in a designated room for relaxation so that you can just sink inside of it and forget about your daily woes. Choose a sofa or armchair to help you relax when you really need it. If you’re a fan of watching movies on your projector or playing video games on your computer, a gaming chair would be a good alternative. An office chair could do the trick as well. It would help you get in the mood for some gaming and quickly get your mind off of things and into the virtual world. Make sure any seating you choose is optimally comfortable and that it matches your tastes.


Destressing is a key part of daily life in today’s world. When you’re feeling overburdened by work, school, or personal issues, you need to unwind and take that burden off your shoulders, one way or another. Creating a room all to yourself to do this is the best way to give yourself some respite in trying times. Use some of the above examples for this room and you’ll find it’ll be pretty effective at clearing stress.
