How to Organize and Balance Your Work and Private Life

What most people have in common are competitiveness and hunger for success. As they climb the career ladder, they slowly push their private life in the background without even noticing. With their work as a top priority, they miss out on family commitments and stop leading an active social life. However, being workaholics doesn’t do them any good. It’s quite the opposite. They are more likely to reach their burnout point, suffer from an anxiety disorder, or even become depressed. To lead a healthy and wholesome lifestyle, they need to properly balance their work and private life. If you are a workaholic yourself but looking to turn things around for the better, then this article is just for you. Organize Your Workload

Your workload is probably never the same. Some days you’re swamped with meetings, assignments, and deadlines. Other days you need only a few hours to get all the work done for the day. Whatever your workload is, you have to stay organized. For example, before you start your workday, you can make to-do lists. Write down all of your objectives but be realistic. Then, take a few minutes to think about the items from your list. It will help you prioritize the most urgent and time-consuming ones, so you get down to work right away. Whenever you complete the task, tick it from the list. At the end of the workday, all the ticks from the list will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Share Knowledge with Coworkers

If you want to stay on top of things at work, you first have to be in the loop. Not only you but your coworkers as well. For this reason, you have to share your knowledge as a team. Information, relevant documents, files, updates, etc. No matter how insignificant or small you think a detail is, share it. You never know. It might be the missing piece to the puzzle. Sharing knowledge with coworkers has never been easier. All you have to do is use an internal communication software and keep everyone in the team posted. Therefore, you won’t have to worry about lagging behind your colleagues on projects or assignments.

Delegate More

If you want to balance work and private life, you have to know when it’s enough. This means you shouldn’t take more workload than you can handle. For once, put yourself and your social needs first. Stop sacrificing your family and social life for work. It’s okay to let someone else do the extra work. This way, you can focus on and complete the most demanding tasks and delegate the less important ones to other team members. When you’re creating your to-do lists and prioritizing, think about the assignments you could delegate and whom to pass them to. Don’t forget to bring your coworkers to speed with the expectations, goals, and requirements of the delegated task.  It will not only make their job easier but also increase their chances of completing the task successfully. 

Unplug After Work

When you finish all your tasks for the day, what you should do is unplug. When you call it a day, turn off all work-related notifications on your phone. This means you shouldn’t check emails, reply texts, or return calls, unless in case of an emergency. Once you unplug, you will get your mind off work by spending time with your loved ones or pursuing hobbies you might have. Not checking your phone all the time for calls or texts will allow you to not only attend family gatherings but also fully enjoy them. Whatever activity outside work you participate in will help you unwind and loosen up. More importantly, you will make the most out of every moment in your private life. 

Exercise Regularly

Skipping gym session because your client needs a draft done yesterday? Those days are gone. If you want a healthy work-life balance, there is one thing you absolutely must do. Give your physical and mental health as much priority as you do to your job. Not only does regular exercise keep your body fit but also your mind fresh. Working out is a great way to blow off some steam and stay healthy. Full body workout, Pilates, or yoga can freshen up your mind, give you a burst of energy, and improve your concentration. Hence, you’ll need less time to go through your to-do lists which means more time for your loved ones and other interests.
