I Didn’t Know It At The Time

Rushing into love is a common mistake;
I didn’t know that it would be my biggest.
Moving fast was hard to stop,
As my naked soul was revealed too soon.

An icy chill crept up my spine,
Setting fear into my brain.
Expressing fear isn’t easy to do,
Especially when he says “trust me.”

Panic and prayer don’t often sit together,
But at the hands of a monster,
In the grip of confusion,
I prayed for someone to save me.

Even now, years later, I feel his hot breath
As he told me I owed him myself.
He said, “No doesn’t mean no with a boyfriend”
And I didn’t know he was wrong.

I hid my secret under soft sweaters
And felt that no one would understand.
This time, I’m the one in the wrong.
As you read this, you stand on my side.
