In Step

if you were so interested in consumption
you could just chew us up now
meat might not be so tender in a few years
all this walking we’ve got to do
.
sometimes during a period without much need for public
I forget about these little treats,
my gritted teeth
and the world seems a more just and gentle place
.
but it comes round, again, always
chorus of cacophonous horns and all the voices that accompany
so much more confident than any choir I ever sang in
like boys who’d never hit a wrong note
or rather boys who’d never worried about hitting a wrong note
.
call me a right note
a ring tone
these steps a gloried dance,
this pavement blessed now
.
call all this hurt water,
call the anger water too,
call the memory of it water and watch as the whole world beats to a moonrise,
then
call us the boat
