Love in the Time of Corona

Love is one of the great goods of the universe. Most people will fall in love at least once in their lives, and barring that, almost everyone has someone that they would do anything for. Love means putting someone else’s needs before your own. Love, both romantic and platonic, shows me that there is good in the world. It shows the capacity for selflessness in humanity.

That’s what we as a society need to be right now: selfless. The majority of us are staying at home, not only for our own benefit, but for others. We have love for our fellow humans. We have been putting the health and wellbeing of others over our needs to socialize, to go shopping, and even the need to work. When it comes down to it, this trying time has reminded us what it means to be human.

Being human is not about what we can get from others. Being human is about giving to others. It is about living with others. It is about loving one another. Even though this time has been trying on all of us, we are all living through this story together. This is a global experience that will remind us of the value of love, and we can’t let that unity go away once this is all over.

If there is one thing we should all take away from this time, it is to keep love and compassion in our hearts as we walk through the world.
