Marriage Counseling, Let’s Talk About It

Marriage counseling is not something readily talked about, but so many couples go and see someone. In today’s Instagram picture perfect life I think the perception of perfect relationships puts a strain on your real life relationship. Seeing perfect moments and perfect snapshots all day long gives the illusion that others are leading a perfect life and maybe you’re not.

I think this takes a toll on not only our self-worth, but your relationships. Any married couple will tell you that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. You are making a conscious choice to come together with someone and share your lives together – the good and the bad. People evolve and change and grow while they are together. You aren’t the same person at 20, that you are at 30, 40, or 50. Marriage tests not only our mental limits, but also our physical. You would do anything for that person, whether that means eating pizza more often than you would like to or sacrificing a few hours at the gym to make someone feel better.

With all of this pressure it is only natural to want to go see someone to talk through any issues that may arise. But for as many people that are going to see a marriage counselor, why do we pretend like it’s not happening? Marriage is hard work and so is communication. At the end of the day, the couples that have been married 20 plus years have accomplished a wonderful feat. If they’ve had help along the way – please share your secrets!

I think every couple should look into marriage counseling. Even if you think your marriage is perfect. There is so much to discover about another person. Their love language, the way they communicate, their triggers, what makes them happy, what makes them unhappy and also you may even learn some new things about yourself. Marriage counseling shouldn’t be taboo, it should be a welcomed part of marriage and something everything should look forward to attending.
