Smash Your Heart Out – You’re Only Human

Have you ever read something or heard something that excited you so much it gave you goose bumps? That’s frisson.

It catches me by surprise every time. I am reading something and falling deeper and deeper into the emotion of the text – there it appears – total body recognition of just how amazing it’s making me feel.

We are all so complicated. So beautifully complicated. Harness has opened my eyes to that even more now than ever. And those goose bumps I only used to get during a good concert – come daily now.

When someone takes their twisted, complicated, hurting soul and smashes it on the page for the world to see – it gives me chills. I get to be the first person to see a small sliver of someone’s heart and I feel an immense amount of gratitude every time.

We walk around every day with so much going on inside our brains. Our neurons are firing on all cylinders:  from love to heartbreak to loss to pride.

We have no clue why we were put on this earth. We search for religion, we search for faith, we search for companionship, we want success, we want to travel the world, we want new experiences, we want friendships as deep as the ocean – If that’s not complicated I don’t know what is.

I lose that sometimes. My sense of humanity.  I wake up in the morning to my alarm clock blowing my ear drums out, I shower, I get dressed, I eat my cheerios, I rush to get the dog in order and I’m out the door. Walking from the garage to my desk. I interact with all these people in the elevator, in the break room, in meetings, on the phone, and I never stop to think about how lucky I am to just interact with these people.

I mean I won the lottery — I got to be here. I am not a bird or an ant or an elephant. I am human. And so are you. We both have had so many varying experiences, but all of those experiences lead us right here to this moment in time. While we don’t know where we are going after this – we are both alive in this moment sharing the same space with all of these ideas swirling in our heads, but feet firmly planted in this place.

We will then part ways and I may never see you again or maybe I will, but I may never have taken the time to say “hi how are you” because that’s all any of us ever wanted right? For someone just to acknowledge us and ask “how are you feeling in this moment with that big beautiful brain of yours firing on all cylinders?”

But Why? Why do we want that? Because we want to feel needed and valued and part of a society of people that aren’t as bad as the media makes us out to be. And by damn we deserve it.

So Harness is my small part to ask “Hi how are you?”  or maybe go a step further and say smash your heart out on the page, I am here to listen and I can tell you right now…. there are so many other people here listening too.
