the words that escaped

today

my body is more ghost than flesh

my throat more knot than voice

somedays

i swallow tequila shots to drown my words

today

my words swim faster

which is to say when they reach you

know i already tried to burn them away

the sober parts of me wish you would still hear them

to understand why

i have always

known love like mourning

known mornings like nights

been known the flee the bed before sunrise

if you hear my words closely

you will hear every

letter

syllable

verb

noun

confession

that escaped the fire
