What Makes You Smile?

What makes you smile?

Recently I was asked why I wasn’t bitter to be a mother yet, at my age. I am a 35-year-old single woman who believes in eternal families and raising happy, honest children. Why am I not bitter? Because I hope for my little family, and I hope for my happily ever after, always. What good does it do me if I’m unhappy and dwelling on something that isn’t YET mine? Why focus on the things I cannot control, the things that will ultimately destroy my belief in good things to come?

I focus on the family that I DO have right now. My niece and nephews that love me unconditionally, they are my world and my joy. Although I didn’t give birth to them, I am loved one hundred percent by those sacred tiny humans. I smile because they accept me for who I am, with crazy hair, silly faces, and hands that steal their tiny noses. I cannot control the events of my future but I can control how I prepare for my future. How can I prepare for the future I want? Guys, I don’t have some magic potion, I wish I did. I wish I was like Sabrina the teenage witch and could simply snap my fingers. I prepare by living one day at a time; I surround myself with people that love me and uplift me. I pray for my faith to “fail me not”, I accept those dark days when I just want to cry, I seek for joy in all things, and I search for peace in my personal growth. There is much growth I still need, we all need. I smile because I know that every time I give my concerns and tears to the Lord, I am free to live and enjoy the beautiful moments of “Today”.

Until the day that I can raise my own little family, I cannot and will not allow bitterness and loneliness to derail my becoming a woman of Hope. Let us prepare for what is yet to come, let us women be kind to one another and smile! Smile no matter what difficult path we are on. Oh how I wish we could see how our simple smiles light up the dark that heavily weighs the world today. What makes me smile? The fact that my smile has blessed so many who have joined me on the path of personal growth.
