Fall In Love With Layering

Fall In Love With Layering

Fall is a beautiful time of the year and one of my favorite seasons. I love watching the leaves transform the trees into colorful works of art while the weather begins to gradually drop and fall fashion trends start to appear.

One of the things I love most about fall dressing is layering. The brisk mornings usually turn to comfortable afternoons, followed by cool evenings. The continual flux in temperatures makes it tough to get dressed in the morning. That’s why layering is key to staying polished and warm during your commute & comfortable and cool during the day.

Fear not! Layering does not have to equal bulkiness. A perfectly layered look will compliment your curves and create the illusion of a more proportional silhouette. Here are a couple of rules that I live by for layering.

1. Thin To Win
Staying warm is not directly proportional to the thickness of your clothing. Pile on thin layers that can easily be shed as the temperature increases. Layering up with body-conscious knits and a big scarf helps you manage the temperamental weather.

2. Start Small, Finish Big
Keep the under layers more fitted to maintain your shape. As you pile, the layers can build. If you’re concerned with losing shape, add a belt to define your waist. Start with a long, neutral or striped cami, add a soft cardigan or light-weight sweater that is shorter than the cami (try a bold color to give depth), finish with a jacket or coat. Top with a scarf.

3. Play With Texture
Incorporate different materials in your layers to avoid looking frumpy. I like to start with a super fine fiber on my skin, like Anjé modal. On top of that, I might add a knit sweater followed by a denim or leather jacket.

4. Be A Superhero
For an ultra-chic top layer, swap your coat for a cape or poncho. I recommend wearing leggings or skinny jeans and tall boots to balance out the billowy shape on top.

5. Lengthen In Leather
Leather does not have to be thick to keep you warm. A pair of leather leggings topped with layered knits or a knee-length duster will make your legs look long and lean while staying as warm as your pumpkin spice latte!
