From Serendipity to Spirit-Led Success: How Nicole Colella Kickstarted Her Tarot Business

April 29, 2025

When a tarot deck unexpectedly arrived in a subscription box, Nicole Colella took it as more than just a surprise—she saw it as a sign from the Universe. That moment marked the beginning of a transformative journey that would lead her to create CardShaper and write Kickstart Your Tarot Business. What started as a personal exploration quickly turned into a spiritual calling and a thriving business. In this candid interview, Nicole shares how she stepped into her power as a spiritual entrepreneur, the challenges she faced as a solopreneur, and the practices that keep her grounded, creative, and connected to her purpose.

What inspired you to start CardShaper and write Kickstart Your Tarot Business?
I received a tarot deck unexpectedly in a monthly subscription box and took it as a sign from the Universe to learn something new. I bought a book on Amazon that came with a few free introductory courses. I was immediately hooked and continued lessons with the academy—still thinking it was just for personal use.

As my training progressed, I reached a point where, in order to move forward, I had to conduct 100 readings for the public. This challenge excited me, so I jumped in. The feedback I received was incredible, and several professional tarot readers encouraged me to go pro. Although I’d been an entrepreneur since 2001, I couldn’t find many business-building resources tailored to Spiritual Entrepreneurship. Many of my academy peers were turning to me for advice, and I noticed they had the same questions. That inspired me to write my book and share answers to the most common challenges people face when starting their own spiritual business.

Can you share a personal story or experience that led you to pursue this path?
It was really about being open to where the Universe was leading me—and realizing that sometimes life gives us opportunities in completely unexpected ways.

What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a solopreneur, and how have you managed them?
You have to be prepared to wear a lot of hats, especially when you’re bootstrapping your way through the early stages. I had to think creatively, be persistent, and find unconventional ways to get people to notice my business. Curveballs will come, and no matter how prepared you think you are, you’re never fully ready. You just have to stay adaptable.

How do you balance the demands of running CardShaper with maintaining your mental health and well-being?
Routine, prioritizing, and knowing my limits. Especially in the kind of work I do—if my own mental health isn’t where it should be, I can’t help others. Exercise, eating well, and regular self-care are non-negotiable.

What strategies have you found effective for managing the many roles you take on as a solopreneur?
Only work on a task when you can be fully present and inspired. I’ve found that when I follow inspiration in the moment, the quality is much higher—and I procrastinate less.

Can you describe a moment that really tested your resilience?
The slow season definitely tested me. I started questioning whether I was on the right path. It took a couple of years to recognize that things slow down between April and August. Now, I embrace that season and use it to attend conferences, expand my knowledge, and spend time with my family.

How has working with tarot and supporting other spiritual entrepreneurs impacted your personal growth?
It’s been life-changing. You really do attract people who are on the same frequency. Sometimes I see myself in the person sitting across from me. I’m constantly learning and gaining new perspectives.

What self-care practices do you prioritize to stay motivated and focused?
Spending time in nature, Dead Sea salt baths, and regular exercise. These practices bring me clarity, perspective, and help keep me grounded.

How do you stay connected to your purpose amidst the daily demands of running a business?
After helping a client find balance, I’m reminded why I do this work. I used to be frustrated with the admin side, but now I see how deeply impactful it can be.

What advice would you give to women who want to start their own business but feel intimidated?
Your journey is uniquely yours. Don’t compare your progress to anyone else’s. Celebrate your successes and learn from your setbacks. Both offer lessons that improve your well-being—and the well-being of others.

How do you manage stress and pressure while wearing so many hats?
By only doing what I’m inspired to do in the moment. That’s been a game-changer. I’m more productive, and I avoid burnout. I also pay attention to signs of stress—when they show up, I take a break, change the scenery, go outside.

What role has community support played in your journey?
It’s vital. Networking with other Spiritual Entrepreneurs is underrated. There are so many people going through similar struggles, and coming together to share notes and support each other is always inspiring. We’re better together.

Can you share any insights from your experience that might help others building their own businesses?
You don’t need to do everything at once. When I started CardShaper, it was all word of mouth. I didn’t open an Instagram account until four months in. I’ve grown slowly and intentionally—and that’s okay. Set boundaries. Build your business at a pace that works for you.

How do you keep your creativity alive despite the challenges?
I carry an idea notebook. Whenever I get inspired—whether it’s for a post or a product—I write it down. Sometimes ideas sit for months, but when I revisit them, they spark new energy. It’s a great way to restart your creativity when you feel stuck.

What’s the most rewarding part of your work?
Helping others with the gift Spirit shares with me. It’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done, and I know it’s exactly why I’m here.
