How To Track Your Habits

Sticking to daily, weekly or even monthly habits is easier said than done. Think about your day-to-day tasks, sprinkle in distractions, and you could possibly create a spiral effect, never accomplishing your overall goals. When it comes to tracking habits, the important thing to remember is this: you must create a system that will work for you.

Again, easier said than done. Inherently, we all want to be productive, forming good habits that will help us achieve big goals. Sounds like a dream, but it doesn’t have to be. After doing a little digging, and a few test runs, I’ve found three ways that will help you turn that dream into a reality. Wait—there’s more, grab your planner; these three gems will not only help you track your habits, they will help you stick to your habits as well.

To get started, every Sunday, identify your habits for the week. Be specific. For example, instead of saying you want to get fit, write everything down in your planner the days and times you want to go to the gym. The more specific you are, the better. Trust me, writing down your habits works. If this seems like it will be too much for you, narrow it down to the easiest tasks, then work your way up. Baby steps, my friends, baby steps.

Color-coordinate your checklist. Once you’ve identified the habits you want to track, throw some color on that bad boy! Why not glam up your planner with bold, bright hues that say, look what I’ve accomplished. Don’t turn this idea into a colorful distraction. Three to four colors should work—try your best to keep it simple.

One way to up the ante on your quest for sticking to your habits is by establishing a productivity zone. A productivity zone is a fancy way of scoping out a quiet place where you can feel and be productive. Your productivity zone should give you a peace of mind and focus. Get cozy and warm, sip hot tea, light candles and flush out those habits you want to tackle.

Once you get a handle on tracking your habits, you’ll not only feel accomplished but now, you’ve scored major productivity points. Setting up a system to track your habits means that those big goals that you’ve been dreaming about are well on their way to becoming a reality.
