Walk Away

“Don’t look back.”

“Don’t look back.”

“Don’t look back.”

She repeats the words over and over,

As she gathers up her clothes,

Strewn across the room,

Takes out her mug from the kitchen cabinet,

Then reaches for her grey sweatshirt but leaves it,

As it smells too much of him.

Her cap is pulled low over her eyes,

But her lips are in a constant conversation

with no one in particular,

except there is no sound.

Her hand pauses on the doorknob,

As the full realization of the decision she is about to make,

And what it entails, hits her.

“Walk away.”

She pleads to herself.

The bruises on her extended arm

Give her the final push she needs.

Squaring her shoulders,

She walks out,

Her first steps,

On the road,

To Healing,

To Herself.
