One Weird Invitation

It was a bright sunny afternoon while I was sitting at the kitchen table. I was reading a news article on my phone and drinking a nice cold cup of sweet tea. When all of a sudden the doorbell rang. I thought it was odd because I wasn’t expecting anyone. I get up to check the door. I open it to be met with a nice warm breeze.  No one was standing there so I look around to see no one on either side of the street. Not to the left, right, nor across the street. I think it is a prank until a light blue envelope catches my eye, sticking out of my mailbox. I grab it and flip it over to reveal dark blue flames on the front but with no name except my own. I walk back inside closing the door behind me. I go back to the kitchen table to examine it some more. There is a wax seal keeping the envelope closed but I do not recognize the crest. I carefully open the envelope to find an invitation with the same design. I try to read the invitation when my dog jumps up and grabs it from my hand. He runs up the stairs until finally he stops and sits in the corner of my room.

“Silly pup, you just trapped yourself. Drop the card.” He drops it into my hand. I give his head a quick rub before heading back downstairs. I sit back down at the table and finally see that it says ‘You have been invited!’ ‘More to come’. Confused I flip it over to find ‘Your favorite God’. It’s really hard to tell what is going on in the heads of those Gods.

A few days go by and I receive another invitation. Again with the ‘You have been invited’ but this time it reads ‘I am going to take you somewhere you have never been before, join me for a new experience’, with the same cryptic ‘Your favorite God’ on the back. I can’t even fathom who is sending me these things, so it’s time to get to the bottom of this. I go to my friend’s house to see if they have ever seen anything like this. But I am careful to only show them the first one. They both answer the same saying that they have never seen it.

A few weeks later yet another invitation is tucked away in my mailbox. But this time after the knock, when I open the door I am not met with a warm breeze instead I am met with a sulfur smell. I grab the envelope this time not with a wax seal but with a heart shaped sticker. I made sure not to rip the sticker when opening it. I take out the invitation when I get hit by that same sulfur smell. I take out the invitation this time very carefully. It reads ‘You have been invited to somewhere you have never been before. Join me for a new experience when the last invitation comes. Meet me at the gates of Olympus at midnight.’ And on the back again it says ‘Your favorite God.’ Okay, this has gone from weird to freaky. The only place I haven’t been to is… My mind draws a blank for some reason. Then out of nowhere, it hits me like a ton of bricks. I have never been to The Underworld. That’s the only place mom has explicitly told me never to go. Who would want me to go to the Underworld? Couldn’t be Hades, I’ve only ever met him once. Oh well, guess I’ll just have to find out when that last invitation arrives. Two weeks pass before the next one arrives in my mailbox. This time the envelope surrounding it is not the light blue but a light pink, and instead of the flames, they are little red hearts dancing across the paper. (At this point I have visited the Underworld a dozen times, I have even met Hades. I think I really like him. I open the letter carefully, this time when I open it glitter falls out. This time something different is written on it. ‘Can’t wait to see you. Just remember, meet me at midnight.’ This time on the back all it says is ‘Wear your best dress.’ I look up at the clock and it reads ten-thirty. I have some–but not a lot– of time to get ready. I go into my roommate’s closet to find a nice dress. I grab a big handful of dresses and take them into my room and throw them on my bed. I decide on an older Greek style dress. I look at the clock once again and see it’s now eleven. I ran into the bathroom and put on natural makeup, and I put my hair up into a braid. By the time I am done it is eleven-forty five. I grab my fur coat and I sneak out past my roommate sleeping on the couch. I slowly close the door making sure I don’t make too big of a noise. Thankfully I don’t live too far from the gates.

By the time I got there, I see a tall figure standing there. I try to see who it is but before I can see he speaks. “Persephone, darling you look so lovely.” Just with those words, I notice who it was.

“Hades?” I call out.

“You got my invitations great, I thought Artemis would have gotten to them.”

“I made sure to hide them pretty well,” I say with confidence.

“Good, I don’t want her to interrupt our night together,” he says while walking into the light.

“But why didn’t you tell me it was you,” I asked walking closer to him.

“Well at first I was going to, but after Hera gave you the internship in the Underworld, I thought it would have been a little weird. Don’t you think?” He says taking one more step towards me.

“I mean yeah, kinda.” I look at the ground.

“Exactly. That’s why I didn’t tell you.” He grabs my chin and raises it up.

“I’m here, now where are we going,” I say looking into his eyes. He lets go of my face and opens the gates

“Are you coming?”

I approach him cautiously. He gets in his car that was waiting right on the other side of the gate and rolled down his window. “Do you trust me?”
