There Will Come a Day

There will come a day when, without knowing, I forget

What it feels like to not regret

Going silent instead of saying exactly

What was going through my mind, that we

Were worth more of a fight than either of us spoke aloud.

There will come a day when a leathery scent

Doesn’t trigger the torment

In my gut of a distant memory, holding your hand

As I watched each of my tears land

Silently in my lap and wondered if yours were ever true.

There will come a day when I am whole again.

When I don’t reach for you on instinct and then

Find you missing, the vacant space

As empty as the look on my face

After realizing your heart was never mine.

Today is not that day.
